Wright Street Apartments

The site was perceived as an ‘urban oasis’, given the lush parkland of Brigatti Park directly to the west. Based on this, the design intention was for this green space to inform and be celebrated within the architecture.

In interpreting and responding to the site, horizontal striations and contextual lines evident in the existing built form of Wright Street were identified and referenced.

Accommodation is provided across two separate low-rise buildings, allowing for the penetration of natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy between individual apartments.

The articulated form of the front building steps away from the northern boundary, maximising access to natural light for private and common spaces. This building, facing the street frontage, is lower and carefully articulated to respect and enrich the existing streetscape and surroundings.

The stepping of the built form reduces the perceived massing, softening its relationship to the streetscape and neighbouring properties while maintaining human scale and context.

The apartment balconies introduce green elements across vertical levels and are used to reduce overlooking and the perceived bulk of the building. These recessed balconies, together with external sun-shading screens, minimise east-west facing thermal load to the apartments.
