The project was the winning entry by Scanlan Architects from a public tender/competition offered by the Town of Cottesloe in 1994 and was completed and opened in October 1996. The building was inspired in part by its predecessor, The Centenary Bathing Pavilion and combines elements of late twentieth century postmodern and Australian nostalgic architectural styles.

In meeting council’s brief, the intent was to create a development that sits comfortably in the bay with the end product something the community and Council could be proud of and would endure over many years. Settled on a hill, the present Indiana Teahouse not only recaptures Cottesloe’s past but has introduced a certain ambience to Perth’s oldest and most treasured beach.

The Indiana Tea House is now a famous landmark, achieving icon status in a relatively short period of time and its image is synonymous with Cottesloe Beach, it is photographed widely and used regularly to promote this iconic destination in Western Australia to the rest of the world.
